メタリカ（Metallica）「Ride the Lightening」から学ぶこと

メタリカの2枚目のアルバム『Ride the Lightning』は、スラッシュメタルの勢いに加えて、初期の段階から叙情性やドラマ性を打ち出したターニングポイント的作品です。処刑台の電気椅子をイメージしたジャケットどおり、「死」「運命」「戦争」「罪の意識」といった重いテーマを、複雑なリフと印象的なメロディで描き切っています。1曲目の「Fight Fire with Fire」の超速スラッシュから、インストの「The Call of Ktulu」まで、若きメタリカの野心と実験精神が詰まった1枚です。

1990年7月24日にアトコ・レコーズからリリースされた『カウボーイズ・フロム・ヘル』は、パンテラの5作目のスタジオアルバムですが、広くは彼らの真の初期作とみなされています。テキサス州出身のこのバンドがグラムメタルの過去を脱ぎ捨て、1990年代のメタルシーンを支配することになるグルーヴメタルの革命的なサウンドを披露した瞬間です。

ワスプ (W.A.S.P.) デビュー作「魔神伝」お疲れさん

W.A.S.P.のセルフタイトルデビューアルバムは、1984年8月17日にキャピトル・レコードからリリースされた。しばしば「W.A.S.P.」または「Winged Assassins」と呼ばれるこのアルバムは、80年代ヘヴィメタルとショックロックの金字塔であり、「I Wanna Be Somebody」や「L.O.V.E. Machine」といったヒット曲を収録している。このアルバムによってバンドは、荒々しく、物議を醸すような、エネルギッシュなサウンドで確固たる地位を築いた。
今回はこのデビューを果たすまでの苦労話をちょいと。
